This site turns the vague question "how much does moving abroad cost?" into three numbers: the total one-time outlay, the cash a landlord will ask for on day one, and the rent your monthly income can support without draining savings.
- Flights, shipping, visa and insurance costs you have been quoted
- Deposit, agency fee and advance rent in the destination market
- Your net monthly income, fixed costs and savings target
Why the answer is not obvious
Most move-abroad budgets stop at flights and a shipping quote. The cash that actually blocks a move is the move-in stack: deposit, agency fee, first month, utility deposits and the furniture you cannot ship. That stack is several times the flight, and it arrives before any salary does.
Who it is for
People relocating for work, study or family reasons who need a defensible budget before signing a lease or paying a deposit.
Frequently asked questions
Should the relocation budget include rent?
Only the cash paid before you move in: deposit, agency fee, first month or advance rent, and utility deposits. Ongoing rent belongs in a monthly budget, not in the one-time relocation total.
How much contingency is reasonable?
Ten to fifteen percent of the known costs is a practical starting point. Currency moves, extra baggage, temporary accommodation and document translations are the lines people forget, and they are rarely small.
Is the 30% rent rule reliable?
It is a starting point, not a rule. Landlords often screen on gross income at three times the rent, while your actual comfort depends on net income, fixed costs and savings. Use the calculator to test the share your budget can carry.
Why separate relocation cost from move-in cash?
They are paid on different dates and to different people. Relocation costs hit before departure; move-in cash hits at the lease signing. Separating them shows the real peak of the cash curve.
